Frustration Superstation

July 31, 2012

This getting up early to beat the heat thing is getting really old really fast. I am not a morning person, nor have I ever been one. Staying in bed, to me, almost always beats out anything going on…unless it is work or I am flying out somewhere that morning. I am really realllllly good at coming up with a plan of how I will do it later, or do it tomorrow, and turning off my alarm.

I did this three times this past weekend, and now I feel like a huge loser. I know I’m not really a loser, duh, but I am frustrated with myself. I feel like missing important training runs has put me behind. My coach, Susan, says I AM NOT BEHIND! So that makes me feel better! I still need to figure out what the hell my problem is! Don’t get me wrong, I have been getting up early to run a lot; but sometimes, I go through periods of time where it is just a lot harder for me. I yet again proved to myself today that I do not do well running in the heat. Even when it is not as hot as usual for 8am in July, it is still too hot for me.

Maybe I need to drink more coffee in the morning…

More Coffee!! Dog

Unfortunately, coffee + water + running = stopping to pop a squat behind any large object way too many times during my run! He’s cute, though, isn’t he!? On the other hand, coffee after a run is the best thing ever!

So what advice do all of you morning people out there have for me?? Lay it all out for me! I’ll take all of the advice I can get!

Going to bed so I can hopefully drag my ass out of bed for track tomorrow.

Happy Trails!

Stacey

The only thing that works for me is repeating stupid, cliche things to drag my butt out of bed, like “Just do it” and “You’ll regret NOT doing it more than doing it.” In the summer, it’s a lot of “you WANT to do this and this is the ONLY time of day you can.”
Also, getting up right away, not even one snooze, not even puppy cuddle time, just jumping right up. It helps to have clothes laid out too! More often than not I feel fine after about 5 minutes and I’m glad I got up, but every now and then, I’m just really not feeling it – I’m really dragging or in the winter if it’s too cold – and I let myself go back to bed but at least I tried!
Think about race day and WHY you’re doing it and how much better race day will be if you follow the training plan! I run for coffee too…I always have it after a run!
Please keep in mind my Pollyanna attitude comes from NOT training for anything this summer, so perhaps I’ve forgotten what it’s really like! You are awesome!

I love your Pollyanna attitude, lol! Thanks, Megan! Good points all around. Thinking about race day and how much easier it will be after following the plan definitely helps! Are you going to start training for any races in the fall anytime soon?

I don’t really have awesome advice because I suck at mornings-blech, but some of my runner friends say running partners /groups are the only thing that get them up and at it. I recently moved north valley, and am looking for running groups here when I start marathon training next month. We could always meet up if you’re close (I mean that in a totally non creeper/stranger way). :] Good luck!

Thanks for stopping by, Christy! Runnjing partners and groups definitely help me to get up, I agree with them. We live down in Ahwatukee, so kind of opposite side of town as you, but if there is ever a good chance to meet in the middle-maybe during cooler times so we don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn!!-maybe we could meet!

i’m sooo glad to hear someone else is hating the heat- i mean, i’m sure everyone is hating it but i feel like there is a ceiling on it for me, and beyond that i just *can’t* be out in it. pretty sure i’m going to have to trade some group long runs for the treadmill, unless i can find an ice hat or something that works 🙂
mornings- definitely just get out of bed. everything else figures itself out, but that alarm has to mean i’m on my feet, otherwise that tiny window closes on the sound of me zzzzzzzzzzing back to sleep!

After a certain temp, and especially if the sun is shining in a cloudless sky, I am spend after like 2 miles. There is definitely a very small window of opportunity after which I know I will not get up. I am working on this, though….meeting up with people really does help to get me out of bed. It is also way easier when I don’t have to be at work at 9 or 10 that morning, because I know I can look forward to a good nap after my run. There’s no better sleep than curling up after a nice shower in bed after a great run! Let me know if you ever find that ice hat 🙂

I’m totally there with you about being jazzed the night before to get up early and then the time comes and I develop an equally awesome plan that I’m jazzed about that lets me sleep longer. Lol. Maybe when your alarm goes off the first thing you should do is look at exercise inspiration tumblrs online. Its like a visual version of the positive Polyanna thinking Megan was talking about. It never fails after I look at those, I just want to get up and start exercising.

I love that you stop and pee behind things on your runs. and I LOVE the illustration you’ve included. You should look up Saturday Night Live on Netflix. In the 1970’s Season 2, episode 7, they do a commercial parody for Doggie Uppers and Doggie Downers. Its pretty cute.

I’ve seen the doggie uppers doggie downers one before! It’s been years, so I’ll have to look it up again. TOO funny! Maybe I need to hang pics of the finish line and of hot bodied runners from the ceiling, lol!
