What's In My Grocery Bag?
Friends, family, coworkers, and readers often ask me what I do to eat healthy. What do I eat? How do I do it? It's hard to explain all of the healthy substitutions and choices I make on the spot, so I've decided to show you guys what's in a typical grocery haul for me. I don't skimp on groceries. I don't spend a shitload of money on alcohol anymore, so I have chosen to fully invest in my healthy lifestyle. In my old life, this wouldn't fly. In my new and amazing life, healthy living and what goes in my body is a priority for me.
This haul is going to look insane considering I live with my dog. It's just the two of us! Many of the items will last more than a week, though, so keep that in mind. I often do a bigger grocery trip every 2-3 weeks, and grab fresh produce and items I run out of throughout the week.
The green beans are for Ali. Ali is currently on a diet. She has turned into a little chunk nugget, and we need to fix that. She was on prednisone for longer than I wanted her to be a could of months ago, and as a result, gained 1-2 lbs. See? Even my dog eats healthy!
Here are some closer up pics for y'all so you can see everything better:
Yes, that's a lot of fresh produce. Believe it or not, I fly through it! I mostly snack on fruit, fruit smoothies, and juiced fruit and veggies. Sometimes, I'll have a bar or crackers and hummus.
Ali said she wanted some green beans. She also said that I had to let her photobomb the picture.
I don't buy crap. Crappy food that is. If I don't have it in the house, I don't eat it. I can't tell you how many times I've craved junk food or sweets, and gotten so frustrated because my cabinets contain none of the above! It forces me to use the healthier things I do have to make my snack. For example, I'll make a dark chocolate berry smoothie when I'm craving a candy bar. I add dark chocolate powder, a tablespoon of Nutella, half of a frozen banana, frozen strawberries and blueberries, and unsweetened almond milk to my Vitamix. My guilty pleasure is usually FroYo, which in comparison to ice cream or a candy bar is way less calories.
In addition to black coffee, water, and unsweetened tea, I drink a lot of sparkling water. I get the kind that is unsweetened and just has a hint of flavor. It is so refreshing, especially in the summer! I dont know if y'all believe this, but I used to drink diet soft drinks all day, everyday. I'd drink a couple at work, and then 2 to 3 cans after I got home at night. Now, I probably have one every month or two, unless I'm at a meeting or something and that's all they have.
None of the changes I have made happened overnight. I have gradually worked my way to where I'm at now by reading blogs, talking to friends, and learning by any means possible more about what is the best kind of fuel for my body. If you think of food as fuel and nourishment, it makes the whole concept a lot easier.
